stratotype

A specifically bounded type section of rock strata to which a time-stratigraphic unit is ascribed, ideally consisting of a complete and continuously exposed and deposited sequence of correlatable strata, and extending from a readily identifiable basal boundary to a readily identifiable top boundary.
