source rock

1. Rock from which fragments have been derived which form a later, usually sedimentary rock. Also known as mother rock; parent rock. 2. Sedimentary rock, usually shale and limestone, deposited together with organic matter which was subsequently transformed to liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons.
