A metamorphic rock containing abundant particles of mica, characterized by strong foliation, and originating from a metamorphism in which directed pressure plays a significant role. Schist refers to a metamorphic rock which exhibits fine lamination or layers along which the rock may be easily broken.A large group of coarse-grained metamorphic rocks which readily split into thin plates or slabs as a result of the alignment of lamellar or prismatic minerals. Mica is a good example.
