overturn

Renewal of bottom water in lakes and ponds in regions where winter temperatures are cold; in the fall, cooled surface waters become denser and sink, until the whole body of water is at 4øC; in the spring, the surface is warmed back to 4øC, and the lake is homothermous. Also known as convective overturn.
