negative element

A large structural feature or part of the earth’s crust, characterized through a long geologic time period by frequent and conspicuous downward movement (subsidence) or by extensive erosion, or by an uplift that is considerably less rapid or less frequent than that of adjacent positive elements. Also known as negative area.
