Meerschaum (sepiolite) is a white or yellowish earthy mineral, consisting of hydrous magnesium silicate. It is highly porous, and may float on water. It is very soft, with a relative hardness of 2 to 2.5 and is easily turned into pipes and cigar-holders. Before use the meerschaum is impregnated with oil, tallow or wax.
