grain boundary area reduction

Grain boundary migration leading to reduction in the total surface area of grain boundaries in an aggregate. The process operates spontaneously in response to the decrease in internal free energy that a grain aggregate gains by decreasing the area of (high-energy) grain boundaries; it leads to straight grain boundaries and large grains
