deformation

Change in shape and orientation of objects or volumes of rock from an initial to a final state. We use the term deformation in this general sense, while the word strain has a more restricted significance, that is, the change in shape of an object or part of the rock. Any change in the original form or volume of rock masses produced by either surface or body forces.
