Complex organic compounds found in oil, bitumen, rocks, and sediments that are linked with and distinctive of a particular source (such as algae, bacteria, or vascular plants); they are useful dating indicators in stratigraphy and molecular paleontology. Also known as chemical fossils; molecular fossils.
